More digital Painting

I tried to really get into the "painting" aspect for this piece. I think it's the farthest I've pushed the concept of paining in Photoshop so far. I feel like I'm starting to get on the track I'm looking for.

I read somewhere about an artist I love that she practiced a ton of little digital paintings. She didn't get into the big stuff until she was pretty good at the program. So I'm trying to follow her example!


Edit: An important (for me, I think) discovery from Drawn! is this Disney/Pixar fellow who has a whole slew of drawing videos... helping you to draw better gestures etc. I've only watched one, but it was amazing. I want whatever pens/paint pens/ink pens he has. THEY LOOK SO SMOOTH AND LOVELY!! He's Here. On YouTube. Watch and Adore.

Sharpies

Here is a little somethin somethin I worked on today. I'm in a bit of an art slump.
Done with a fine tipped sharpie and my markers. (My art markers and my crayola. I don't discriminate.)

Example

Never thought I'd post something like this, but I thought it'd be a neat exercise for people wanting to draw more/wanting to learn anatomy... I go to www.posemaniacs.com and do 45second sketches all on top of each other. Just a huge mass of drawings. I find I learn a lot quickly, and it is a great warmup for my day. Whole thing took about 20 mins? Didn't really time myself.

Here is my newest drawing for the jam! I tried to go with a much more tame look, also left most of the original sketchy lines instead of creating photoshop lines. Sometimes they look too "clean".

Fear

So I had a trip to the oral surgeon today about my wisdom teeth. My appointment is confirmed for the end of April. That's fine. However, he told me that he's extracting ANOTHER tooth, my hidden canine. The one that's haunted my dreams since I was 12. The tooth that's embedded in the roof of my mouth. It will finally be gone, and not cause me any more problems! However, this means I will be missing one of my adult teeth. This also means that when my baby canine FINALLY decides to take a leap out of my mouth, I will have a gap. SURE there are falsies, but since I don't know anything about those, the thought terrifies me. Here is a watercolour of me without my baby tooth. Haha. FEAR!



Edit:
I was thinking more and more about missing teeth. I have never seen a business person with a missing tooth. I feel like missing teeth can depict poverty, for if one has the money, one will have great teeth. Dentistry is so expensive, but also such a huge priority. So unfortunate. I'm awful at expressing my innermost thoughts, so here is a sketchity sketch.

Kitty Girl

Something I whipped up today. May make a story about her, someday. She's got spunk.

I sketched up an Avatar character tonight, and went to town colouring her. Thew in a background, and VOILA!

Acrylics

I'm not a huge fan of acrylic painting. I prefer oils, or watercolours. I'm used to oils and watercolour, so I figured, "Hey, I'm going to try acrylics out FOR REAL and get to know them, and maybe, just maybe, I'll like them." SO I went out and bought acrylic paints and some cheap 'canvas paper'. Here is what I came up with. I ended up cutting the paper to a strange shape. I can't WAIT to get a nice scanner. Maybe I'll do that on Thursday...hmm.

Markers! Again!

After taking a tip from Krystin, I attempted using my markers with Q-tips and water. This is the result of that experiment!

The Place To BE!

More colour work!

I drew this a while ago. He is kind of a concept drawing of a character that makes a brief appearance in "FEW" (our Graphic Novel) which I'm not working on until I feel better.


This drawing was done in photoshop CS3, and I used a palette from an artist I admire. I tweeked it only a wee bit. I don't know how, but her colours come out SO bright, and mine die when I save. I used the same colours, so why do mine fade?? Confusing!

Illustrator

I'm practicing my skills with Illustrator CS3. Here is something I came up with from a watercolour I decided not to turn into a painting.

Freebies

So I have a degree in art. I paid an AWFUL lot of money to get said degree. And then I'm requested to do free art for people... I mean. I don't mind a favor for a favor. Example: I have a friend who's amazing at English. I asked him to read over an essay for me. Great! He asked me to do a banner for him for his blog, so I'm going to! See? it's like trading goods. He's good at one thing, I'm good at another, and we trade.

Here is an example of my coworker's dog I drew for her. It's actually the cutest dog I've ever seen. (Yes, that includes my own dogs, and your dog too, if I've seen it.) I've decided it's the last "freebie" I'm giving out, because I like my co-worker and she's helped me out a lot at the job! BUT NO MORE!

This concludes the free art spree. Now my prices are HIGH!!!!

Inspiring interview

I'm watching this interview that I found posted by "KTShy" on Twitter! Here! It's very inspiring... so I sketched the man: Marcelo Vignali. I hadn't heard of him before, but he's a smart, smart man.

More Photoshop

Here is a sketch I did and then coloured in Photoshop. I'm trying to work on my colouring skills, but I find I get so bored with it part-way through. I will keep working on it, however, until it becomes easier. =) I really really want Corel Painter 11, but that costs like $400. Sigh, maybe a back to school present? hehe

This is a character from a comic I'm working on with a friend. We should get it up on the web in April? That's when we're hoping for, but I'm thinking it's going to take a lot longer than that. We shall see, though! This character won't be in the comic for a long time, though. She's just my current fav. ( I have a new favorite every couple of days. It just depends who I'm drawing at the time, I think.)

Digital colour

I'm trying to improve my digital colouring skills. I think I'll do better if I scan in some line-art, but the scanner I currently have is terribad. I am leaning towards buying a new scanner and a new printer, so that maybe, once I get my art rolling, I could sell some amazing prints! But that's all in the distant future.

So anywho, here is a sad fellow, persecuted for standing up for himself. Now in a cage, he is paraded through the dark, gloomy city... ENJOY! <3

Christmas Gift

Asking for some advice.

EDIT! I redid my bookcase- Here's the newer image! I worked on angles and trouble areas. Still kind of having trouble with trashcan?!





I'm not a master perspective-creator. So! I've been working on my 2 point perspective piece and so far, this is what I came up with. The instructions are as follows:

"A two-point perspective drawing of a four-shelf bookcase with a minimum of 12 items placed on the shelves. These items should be of various shapes and sizes and should demonstrate your knowledge of drawing cylinders, ellipses, ovals, rectangles, and squares in perspective. You must include a trashcan (circular cross-section) situated somewhere in the environment. Your drawing should fill the entire page."

How can I fulfill these requirements any better? Tips, hints, critiques?





One thing I JUST noticed and I am working on is the structure of the bookshelf, itself. One side is all out too far and crap. I'm working on fixing that now, so other than the entire bookcase itself, what else needs fixing?! haha

Man Alone

So I took a break from portfolio-work and I came up with this. I'm practicing my Photoshop painting, this is just the beginning!


I'll work on it more once I see what else I can do to it! Sketch on paper, then scanned, then coloured as a 'multiply' layer. Exciting!

Portfolio Work

I am working on my portfolio. I have compiled a batch of figure drawings I plan on using in my portfolio... Here are some examples!








My portfolio "to do" list now looks as follows:

-1 foot drawing (I'm just sticking with the rest that I have, but I feel I need one more that is a "toes-head-on view.)
-6 drawings of 3 characters (One of them sitting, the next of them in the midpoint between sitting and standing. This one proves difficult.)
-1 two-point perspective drawing of a bookcase with at least 12 items on it. (Showing my sickass skillz.)
-3 more thumbnails for said bookcase.
-1 self portrait in an environment that reflects my personality? Hard.
-5 random artworks... I'm probably just going to pick things I've already done, but selecting will be the hard part. Probably a book I've done, and then an oil painting... So much to think about.

If my portfolio does well, it could save me $12,000 (basically, this includes living/supplies/tuition etc.). BUT if it doesn't do well, that just means I get to do 3 years of school instead of just 2. YAY MORE SCHOOL! I love learning... so either way is a bonus. I just wish money wasn't such a huge issue. Anyway, wish me luck!

Mailed off my Book

So I finally sent off my book. It's going to be judged to see if it'll make it into the show. Exciting! If it doesn't make it in, I'll know that my books are actually the poops and I should be sticking to paintings/drawings instead! hahahaaha ;)

New Book

Here is a sample from the new book I'm creating. The theme was "Texture" so I went with an old nightmare I had which was a zoo of monsters. I'm focusing on the different textures achievable by watercolours... My favorite is the one where you wet the page and then throw down colour... can't get enough!!

This is just one layer of 3, but I like it the best so far (since it's the only one I've gotten done, I suppose...). I just need to cut it up and do the other 2 layers and I'm laughin! =)


I'm considering doing the other layers in different media, but we'll see.

Brush tests

This began as an attempt to create a scene of a girl I saw today on my walk home from dropping a lunch off, to an experiment with brushes. I know, I used them almost everywhere (except on the girl, I suppose.) But I feel I learned a lot, and at least the final image is ... colourful. Haha! Enjoy it, anyway! =D

Photoshop'd

I decided to try my hand at some photoshop painting. I want to start doing more art-related things. Here is one of said things. I may work on a real watercolour now... I'll let you know how that goes.

New Watercolour

Here is a rough copy of a painting I'm working on. My scanner is terrible, so I tried to use Photoshop to improve the quality. I got pretty far with it, but it's still not like the original. When I get some money, I'll have to invest in a good scanner.

Watercolour on sketchbook paper. Reference I used was a gesture drawing I had done at one of my recent figure drawing classes.

Final Project

My final project in my digital course is to make a cd album cover/booklet. I'm doing Radiohead. Here is what I have so far, done all in Illustrator. I think that Photoshop would be a better program to do Radiohead album covers in, but oh well, it's an Illustrator course! It's about 50% complete!
